Summer Academy

Reflection
Unlike previous years, the STEM Summer Academy was over the course of one day and was initiated through collaborative group activities of which includes the writing of what technologies are essential to human life to then share and constructing parts of a contraption to raise an object from the floor to a table using random crafting tools in phases of which during each phase, a group would transition to another group’s contraction to add on, demonstrating a process common in science fair in which someone expands upon other’s work to improve a technology. Proceeding this, we were told the responsibilities needed to be adhered to and requirements needed to be completed to continue participation in STEM as well as to be deemed a distinguished STEM graduate by the end of a student’s senior year. In the last moments of the event, students got into groups of two of which each group received sets of the same materials and were asked to create any structure using the material while also recording what they have done. Proceeding a preset timer, the students were instructed to take apart what they had created and switch papers with a nearby group for the groups to attempt replicating the process the other group used based off the information of the sheet. This gave an opportunity for oncoming students to understand the importance of having a discrete procedure when completing their science fair project so that others may build upon this information. Before direct collaborative construction, students were advised to create a sheet listing specific qualities about themselves so that they could then share these qualities while performing other activities which would then be used to create quantitative and quantitative data tables later on once school has started for freshman or as a reminder on how to create these graphs for upperclassmen.

Responsibilities
The behavioral standards of the STEM program are maintained such as the complete attention of students while in class, removing personal electronic devices from work area unless instructed to be used, abstention from plagiarizing whether it be through another person’s voice or work including artificial intelligence programs, maintaining an A-B average and preventing a student’s assignment to ISS or OSS. Most tasks remained consistent including the participation in the Harrison High School Science Fair and completion of certain activities to be filed into an E-portfolio though one of the E-portfolio check dates was moved. Additionally, Juniors are not required to present an Oral Defense of their Science Fair Project.
