Summer Academy

Reflection
As was done last year, the STEM Summer Academy only occurred over the course of a single day and was indicated by a division into groups to perform an escape room like activity involving levels of smaller tasks to be completed. For example, the initial activity involved the following of instructions from a point to either move forward or turn right or left on a 5x5 grid until the commands end as was instructed by a partner based using directions on a sheet of paper. The number was then written down and the activity was repeated with different sets of instructions each time. Another activity involved the determining of a set of numbers using a list of letters which required the use of a chart containing letters and their corresponding numbers. Overall, these activities involved the reading of charts, graphs and diagrams based off instructions or general prior knowledge which either introduced or reaffirmed skills required for this which are prevalent in the evaluation of data as is done in many class activities. Thereafter, we viewed a portion of the presentation decerning the responsibilities those in the program would be held to as well as what should be done to attain Distinguished STEM graduate recognition. This was then paused to begin another activity in which STEM students were asked to categorize their shoes by some component. In such, students talked to each other in a mass and tried to persuade and tell each other how the shoes would be organized of which it was decided to organize based off shoe size. Once this was told to the teacher a few students decided to stand along a wall and tell their shoe size so that others would join in until all had aligned themselves along the wall in groups based off their shoe size. During this, the students adjusted their position so that a line was formed from least to greatest shoe size from left to right respectively. Students then counted the number of shoes in each group and calculated the Simpson's Diversity Index for the shoe population of each grade level. Finally, the seniors then were drawn to another classroom where we were encouraged to discuss what we want to do for the school and the program while we are still in high school.
Responsibilities
Previous behavioral are maintained such as ensuring individual participation in class, maintaining an A-B average, abstaining from activities that can result in ISS or OSS and avoiding plagiarizing other’s work and therefore citing sources correctly. Similarly to last year, there is a continued need to update an E-portfolio though instead of participating in the science fair, senior STEM students are required to attain and maintain an internship within a STEM related field that will be performed over the course of the spring semester. For such, students need to develop some kind of innovation that can aid in some aspect of the job being performed along with creating a presentation for it and an overall review of the experience at the internship.
